At least thirteen passengers perish and 98 wounded in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major public works projects.

The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the national leader.

The official reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose time in office finished the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its duties in national works. They were completed at an accelerated speed, defying forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked ongoing questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a key rival party called for an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This pause was suggested until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the situation "demands prompt explanations."

In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and running of these national undertakings.
