Federal authorities has officially joined a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to block the California's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This legal action, submitted to federal court, challenges the map supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme constitutes a brazen power grab that violates civil rights and undermines the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the new maps will survive court challenges.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to heavily favor Hispanic voters in contravention of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," argued a senior official from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the major response by the Democratic party in the ongoing political battle that started with Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed voter approval, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to gain just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the controlling share will influence the final years of the current administration, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its agenda or face resistance, investigations and potential further challenges.
