EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
